I’ll Be
Chapter One
“Do we have to go to school the rest of this week?” I asked my best friend Kenndi Friesen(pronounced Freezein’) as we were walking out of Mountain Lake Public High School, there was only four days left of our high school careers. “I just want school to end and summer to start, and fall never to come.”
“Me too Mya, this is going to be my saddest week of high school ever, I’m going to miss everything, the gross food, Homecoming, football games…”
“Watching me and Nick play in the Dome for State football in 02’.” Our friend Kyle said joining in the conversation. “Remember the sign someone made saying like Dome Bound: Last One Out Shuts Off The Lights and they put it by Highway 60 leaving town, on our first and only time we made it to the Dome.”
“Oh yeah, how could I forget, we had more fans up their than Windom did.” I said referring to the town about 15 minutes from Mountain Lake. “We have like what 2,000 people living here, and Windom has like 4,000. But then again, a lot of Windom fans came up to watch us at the Dome too, and hardly any of us stuck around to watch them play up there.”
“Where’s Nick?” Kenndi said referring to our other friend Nick. The four us have been friends since we were born. Our moms work together at Hair Techniques, and from the story is told they were all talking about wanting to having kids or more kids one day at work, and a month later they all found out they were pregnant. Nine months down the road the four of us were born the same week. Sadly Kyle Louis Fast, and Nicholas Dean Harder are the oldest. Kyle was born April 14th a Monday and Nick was on the 15th a Tuesday. With them being the oldest they never let Kenndi and I forget about it. Kenndi Lynn Friesen is next in line she was born on Thursday the 17th, and I’m the baby, Miami RayLee Fast and I was born on the 19th on a Saturday.
“Nick’s already in the locker room changing for baseball. I was heading there before I saw you girls walking down the hall, so I thought I could use some company while walking there.”
“Oh, okay. Have fun at practice, Kyle.” I called out, as Kyle walked into the boys’ locker room as Nick walked out. “Hey Nick, what’s up?”
“Nothing, I was in the locker room and then I remember I left my cleats out in my car this morning. Oh I heard a Laker joke this morning.” Nick told us. (The people of Mountain Lake refer themselves as Mountain Lakers, and the teens shorten it to Laker or Lakers.)
“Oh, tell us, tell us.” Kenndi and I said together, and laughed.
“What do you call three Mennonites in a snow storm?”
“What?” I said.
“Wiebe a Friesen Fast.” (We be a freezing fast, common last names of Mennonites, and common last names for Mt. Lakers).
“God, Nick that was horrible.” Kenndi said rolling her eyes at him.
“Don’t roll your eyes at me Kenny Dee,” Said a faking hurt Nick.
“Stop calling me that I’ve hated that nickname since sixth grade when you gave it to me.” Cried Kenndi.
“If you stop rolling your eyes at me, then I’ll try my best to stop calling you that.” He said holding out his hand to shake in a deal.
“I’ll try my best to stop rolling my eyes at you, but that doesn’t me I’m not going roll my eyes at you behind your back.” Kenndi told him while quickly grabbing his hand and shaking it, then letting go.
“Fine. Then I can call you Kenny Dee behind your back then too.”
Kenndi shock her head no and said, “Nope sorry. No can do. We already shook hands on it Nick.”
“That’s not fair you tricked me.” Whined Nick.
“Well, I figured since you are the oldest, you would have figured out what I was going to say before you left your hand out for me to shake. I mean you are the oldest and pry the smartest.”
Nick wrapped his arm around my neck. “Well at least Mya likes me.”
“In your dreams Nick,” I said and wrapped my arm around his back.
We reached the parking lot and said our goodbyes to Nick, before we hopped in my car. Most of the ride was silent until we almost got to Kenndi’s house when she finally spoke. “I can’t believe you are leaving me to go to Tulsa, Okalahoma for college. The four of us have always said we’d go to the same college, MSU but no, your stupid dad had to go and ruin it for us. I have nothing to look forward to this summer besides for the stupid Hanson concert, that I don’t even want to go to because they suck. And that’s in August then after the concert we’ll only have a week left with each other then your leaving me until Thanksgiving because they don’t have MEA weekend down in stupid Okalahoma.”
“First, I’m mad at my dad too. If I could choose I’d choose MSU any day. And sweetie Tulsa can’t be that bad, Hanson does live there. Who knows maybe I could me Zac Hanson at the concert we could fall madly in love with each other, get married, and have kids.”
“You forgot the having bunny sex part.”
“Oh yeah, fall madly in love with each other, have bunny sex, get married, and have kids.” I repeated and tried not to laugh while saying. “I forgot I tend to forget some things these past seven years of having the biggest crush on Zac Hanson. Well the biggest one in Mt. Lake that is. And I don’t even like Hanson that much anymore, I’m not a die-hard fan like most people that like them. There music’s good though.”
“Sex before marriage, you naughty girl what would your parents think of you. And how can you forget that you forgot some things in those seven years. Never mind I’m just confusing my trying to think or say it or…something.”
“Oh, Kenz, you get to confused to easily.”
“Well you forget easily,” She shot back shot back.
“Why would my parents care if I had sex before marriage? They did it in high school, and my mom got pregnant with Mercedes. A few years later they finally get married. Then a month after they got married my mom finds out she’s pregnant with Alexus. Of course, my dad moved down to Tulsa ten years later, met some chick, came back up here to get a divorce with my mom, but my dad finds out my mom went to Miami with her new boyfriend. So my dad flew out there and found my mom, they both got drunk and had sex with each other, and conceive me. What a wonderful life, my dad moves back up here to help raise me. But his chick comes up too claims that shes pregnant with his kid. They get married and move back to Tulsa.” I said catching my breath and talking really fast. “Don’t I just love that my parents named their kids after cars? With the exception of me of course, its where I was conceive.”
“Course you do. Let go do something. I don’t wanna go home yet.”
“Well what do we want to do?” I asked Kenndi.
“Let’s go to Windom isn’t there a Track meet there today.”
“Yeah, let me call my mom and tell her first.”
Graduation week went by fast as well as the month of June. I started listening to Hanson more so I could know the songs of the concert. My Uncle Jim owns the club that they are playing at so I get to go to it. Actually I didn’t even want to go to it. The reason I am going to it because he said I get my birthday present if I go. A little late I think it is.[/color]
